The Korean War has gone down in history as The Forgotten War, a
fact very apparent in the world of computer flight simulators. Simulations
that model the air war in Korea can be counted on one hand, and to make
matters worse many of those games are either old or simply stink. That's
why we were so impressed when MiG Alley came sailing in out of the
wild blue yonder and redefined our expectations for Korean War flight sims.
If you have a 3-D accelerator card, MiG Alley's graphics are
impressive, and the sound effects satisfy. The real appeal, though, is the
game's convincing flight model. Most dogfights during this period were
fought at extremely high altitudes where air density is an oxymoron, and Mig
Alley does a terrific job of conveying the slippery precariousness of
turning in such conditions (according to the accounts we've read by Korean
War pilots). One wrong move and you're tumbling earthward, effectively
turning yourself into a big fat bull's-eye.
The historical differences between the MiG-15 and the F-86 are also
modeled well, as the Russian-built jet trades maneuverability for power
while the American plane is nimble but can't keep up with the MiG in a
climb. Dogfights are only half the story, however, since you also can go
on ground-pounding missions to take out enemy installations, trains, and
other critical enemy equipment. Entire campaigns based around bomb runs
are available, and those missions are just as tense and fun as the sorties
involving aerial combat. You can even direct the entire air campaign,
assigning air and ground targets to flights as you try to manage your
resources to stem the ceaseless wave of planes and equipment coming from
the north. Whether you crave quick action or would like to savor the
strategy elements present in MiG Alley, no combat flight simulator
fan should be without a copy. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
 | Flight model feels terrific
 | Ability to manage the entire aerial campaign
 | Accurate historical differences between aircraft |
| |
Cons:
 | Lack of guided weapons, combined with the high speeds of jets, makes
this sim tough for novices

B-17
Flying Fortress
by Hasbro
Interactive |
Product
Description
The B-17 bomber was the primary bomber used for long-range daylight
bombing in World War II. B-17 Flying Fortress lets you take control
of any of the 10 individual positions of the plane, and puts you in
command of an entire squadron of 12 bombers. B-17 delivers a full
WWII flight-sim experience. As the bombardier, zoom in on targets 20,000
feet below to accurately destroy them. Swat down interceptors as a
tailgunner. You can even escort the lumbering B-17s in a fighter plane, or
join the Luftwaffe and try to keep the bombers from delivering their
payloads.

Combat
Flight Simulator 2: Pacific Theater

Product
Description
Combat Flight Simulator 2 is a dream come true for
historic flight sim fans. Excellent graphics, great sound effects, and
adjustable realism settings make CFS2 a thrilling and accessible
sortie into the unfriendly skies of the South Pacific during World War II.
After choosing to fly for the Japanese or American forces, you can pick
from a selection of seven ultrarealistic aircraft. Experienced flight sim
fans will drool over the plane models, accurate down to the number of
rivets. Newbies will appreciate the excellent flight and landing
tutorials.
There are over 100 missions to fly, many based on historic missions
from the war. This unusual level of realism and attention to detail comes
from the game developers' personal love of flight: many members of the CFS2
team are pilots. Their extensive research included interviews with
Japanese and U.S. aces from the real war in the Pacific. The missions
themselves are lengthy and often complex, and are just as accurate as the
planes; players take part in history, but cannot change the outcomes of
battles.
Because the action takes place in the South Pacific don't expect to see
a wide variety of ground scenery. Not that you'll miss it: the water,
small islands, planes, aircraft carriers, and battleships are always very
sharp and detailed. However, if you expect to play with the graphics at
their best settings, be aware that you'll need a blazing fast machine with
a fast video card. On lesser computers, the graphics in Combat Flight
Simulator 2 start to degrade from stunning to merely ordinary.
The between-mission story arc is told through 1940s-style comic book
panels. The artwork does a good job of moving the story along while giving
the feeling that your character and his fellow flyboys are aware they're
never far from instant death. That the game also allows you to fly the
full Japanese side of the campaign gives the player an interesting glimpse
at the Japanese perspective of the war.
While the game does include such famous planes as the U.S. Corsair,
Wildcat, P38F Lightning, and Japanese Zero, its mere total of seven craft
left us wanting more. We were impressed with the vastly different handling
of each plane, but the lack of variety is disappointing.
But this is a relatively small shortcoming in an otherwise deep and
involving game. If you have a powerful enough PC, Combat Flight
Simulator 2 is a delight, and is sure to please both war historians
and flight sim enthusiasts.--Mark Brooks
Pros:
 | Easy to get into, but can be adjusted to become very difficult and
realistic
 | On highest-quality graphics settings, the game is simply gorgeous
 | Plenty of missions and great tutorials
 | Full Japanese campaign adds depth and historical balance |
| | |
Cons:
 | Only seven flyable aircraft
 | Steep system requirements |
|
